After studying medicine in Austria ( Innsbruck and Vienna) Prof. Strauss started his postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology in Munich ( Germany). Soon his particular interest beside high risk obstetrics was ultrasound and prenatal medicine. From 1996 to 2006 Prof. Strauss has been head of the section ultrasound and prenatal medicine at the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Munich University Hospital Großhadern. Furthermore, since October 2005, he was second head of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. In September 2006 he followed the vocation to Kiel University Hospital. At the department of obstetrics and gynecology he is vice-director.
In 1997 Prof. Strauss accomplished level II qualification for obstetrical ultrasound of the german association of ultrasound in medicine (DEGUM - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin) as well as the level II qualification for breast sonography in 2004. His work on ultrasound and prenatal medicine won scientific prices in 2000 on the 10. World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (project on 3D-ultrasound) and on Medikinale International Munich (interactive CD-ROM on fetal echocardiography). In 2004 his work on diagnostics in fetal arrythmia won the price of the german association of obstetricians and gynecologists and his innovative concept on telesonography (telemedicine) was rewarded with the Klinikförderpreis of the Bayern LB, Munich.
Over the years Prof. Strauss was tutor in the Harvard Munich Alliance for Medical education project. Since ten years he is organizing ultrasound-courses and congresses on a national and international basis. An interactive training CD-ROM on fetal echocardiography as well as an ultrasound textbook was edited by him and his team.
His research interests span the fields from prenatal diagnostics (e.g. fetal echocardiography, Doppler-sonography, three-dimensional ultrasound, telemedicine and future approaches in ultrasound-training) to intrauterine therapy (needle procedures, embryo-/fetoscopy, open fetal surgery) as well as new sonographic options in gynecology (diagnostics in the femal pelvis, ultrasound in urogynecology, breast sonography, minimal invasive interventions as an alternative to operation).
Prof. Strauss's personal interests involve classical music, theater and various sports.
